Vellum document as follows: "His Excellency Caleb Strong, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to William Rice, Gentleman, - Greeting - You being elected on the fourteenth day of May 1813 to be Ensign of a Company in the fourth Regiment of Infantry in the second Brigade and fourth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth........." Also signed by Caleb Strong and Signed Alden Bradford on August 21, 1813. On the back is stated that William Rice personally appeared on September 23, 1813 and took oaths. In badly deteriorated condition, torn in half.
