Vellum document as follows: "Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to William Rice, Esquire, -Greeting - You being elected on the third day of July A.D. 1818 to be Major in the fourth Regiment of Infantry, in the Second Brigade, and fourth Division of the Militia of this commonwealth.........." Signed on July 10, 1818 by Alden Bradford, Secretary of the Commonwealth. Also contains a seal. Writing on back indicates William Rice personally appeared on September 17, 1818 and took oaths. In deteriorating condition, torn when formerly folded. STORED IN DRAWER #4 OF WOODEN CABINET.
