Publication - Cover for pocket-sized Holy Bible, Gift to James C. Rice Pocket-sized Holy Bible front and back covers -- green leather, brass border and clasp. Contains only title page: "The Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments" T. Nelson & Sons, London, Edinburgh and New York. MDCCCLV." On endpaper is dedication written in pencil: "James C. Rice -- with the love and prayers of his affectionate mother. Mrs. Col. Wm. Rice." Followed by poem: "Within this awful volume lies/ The mystery of mysteries/ Ah! happy those of human race?To whome our God has given grace. . . ." [16 lines in total] with J. C. Rice written at the bottom so this might be a poem he wrote. Four small etchings of scenes from the Holy Land on verso. On back cover is written in ink: "1942. Received this Bible February 1942 from Ethel P. Rice, a treasured keepsake of her late husband, John Pierpont [sic] Rice, which will now find its permanent resting place in the Rice Memorial Room, Worthington Library." Note: The Rice Collection was moved from the Worthington Library to the Worthington Historical Society archives in August 2006.
