It was used to house the LaFayette Stevens Diaries as noted on a card taped on the front of the box. These diaries are not in Box 39a. The box itself is a lovely example of an early bread box decoration - gold design and lettering on the front face, reflecting the importance of bread in our daily lives. Two small metal handles.
