1794 Worthington Day Book
INDEX (items purchased) & (items bartered)
PART 1 - INTRODUCTION
How this index works:
Name of Customer (with variant spellings) (Town, if other than Worthington) [Number in Main
Ledger], the Day Book pdf page number (date of purchase)
(items purchased) (items bartered)
Examples:
The entry for
Acers, George [47]: 49 (04/26/1794)
can be found by opening the General Store Day Book pdf and entering 51 at the top (there are 126 total
pages). The easiest approach to locating a name is to scan down the leftmost column and look for the
Ledger Number, in this case [47]. The date for the entry is also provided because an individual page
can have multiple dates. Acers was the last customer on April 26, 1794. The next day the store was
open for business was April 29, 1794. Mr. Acers paid 4s/6p into his account on this date, and there are
no additional mentions of him readable in the Day Book.

Gurdain Palmer, on the other hand, made multiple transactions. Here is his entry in the index.
Palmer, Gurdain (Gurden) [18]: 8 (01/09/1794), 37 (03/24/1794), 47 (04/21/1794), 49 (04/29/1794),
67 (06/28/1794)
Palmer shopped at the store on 5 different days. One of those entries can also be found on page 51 of
the PDF file. Both the Ledger Number, ([18] in this case), and the date (April 29th), can help locate the
name. On this date, Palmer provided 53 pounds of sugar to the store for which he received a credit of
1£/6s/6p
Palmer’s purchase of a half-quire (around 7 sheets) of paper on 01/09/1794 is shown on page 8 of the
PDF file, but on this page his Ledger Number is unreadable because of page damage. It is underlined in
the Names Index to indicate an Unreadable Ledger Number on that page.

Two more things to note, both shown in the entries for Rufus Knowles, below.
Knowles, Rufus [17]: 7 (01/11/1794)
Knowles, Rufus [32]: 26 (02/19/1794)
Knowles, Rufus [86]: 23 (02/11/1794-cash payment), 29 (02/28/1794), 40 (03/25/1794-cash payment),
45 (04/10/1794-cash payment), 48 (04/23/1794), 62 (06/18/1794), 65 (06/24/1794), 73 (07/09/1794),
96 (09/09/1794), 111 (11/01/1794), 127 (11/18/1794)
Although most people charged their purchases, on occasion some paid cash. Within the Worthington
Day Book, cash payments are shown using the words “paid” or “cash” in the left-hand column where the
Ledger Number usually is located.
As shown on Day Book pdf p 23.jpg, Rufus Knowles paid 10 shillings in cash when he purchased ¼
pound of tea on February 11, 1794. He also paid cash in entries showns on pp. 40 and 45.

Finally, several people have more than one Ledger Number. This might have several causes –
possibly an entry error or running out of space on the initial page. Knowles is unique in having three
different Ledger Numbers attached to his name.

The day book was acquired via Ebay.com in February 2021 and restored by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. Each page is sheathed in plastic, and the book can be inspected by wearing archival gloves. The most likely proprietor of the store was Spencer Whiting, and the store was most likely located on what is now Old Post Road, near the intersection with Radiker Road. By late 1794 Whiting had decided to move to Hartford, Connecticut, and he did so on March 20, 1795. The day book contains information on 396 customers and 3,606 transactions for a wide variety of goods. The day book records purchases of goods, items bartered, store credits, credit payments for goods and services, loans, and loan repayments. The day book is thus a treasure trove of information on the social and economic life of the period. The 38-page index includes a complete list of names and explains how to interpret the entries. In 2022 Diane Brenner researched and curated an exhibit in the WHS building about the day book and Worthington in the 1790s.</text>

<text>Leather-covered day book from a Worthington General Store, with entries from 4 January 1794 through Nov. 18, 1794 detailing day-to-day purchases by named Worthington residents. Approximately 40-45 sheets, 90 page*s, handwritten entries, mostly legible handwriting. At least half the pages are fully intact and legible.

Includes many names of Worthington pioneers, records of purchases, records of debt repayments, and mentions of payments for hired work. Many men identified with their honorifics (Dr., Ens., Captain, etc.).Also indictations of whether a person was a debtor (dr after the name) or creditor (cr). Prices shown in pounds/shillings/pence.

Approximately half the pages in very good condition; others show varying degrees of insect infiltration, chipping, tearing and other damage. The leather covers have dessicated and shriveled to some degree and while each folio of the sewn binding is intact, they pages are loose from the spine. Preservation work is needed. Purchased on eBay with donations from many WHS supporters. Was found in an antique store in eastern Connecticut by the seller.</text>
