This collection features clearing out an area of about 9 ha (22.5 acres) as well as a small spruce plantation planted in the 1930's. The operation is highly mechanized, using relatively large specialty equipment. According to our next-door neighbor who moved to the area in 1962, Mrs. Vaughan who owned the property had a number of 'make work' projects for the townspeople during the depression in the 1930's. One project was planting about 6000 spruce trees in at least 3 locations. Another was constructing a swimming pool. I well remember Lester Champion speaking of building the swimming pool, and how cold the water was. I never swam in it, but went over there a fair amount in the 1980's and 1990's. The trees north of ours were removed around 1991. Ours have been due for removal for many years. We took advantage of a logging operation on adjacent land to ours in January 2017. Part of mechanical logging involves chipping brush and other refuse which is subsequently used as bark mulch. Wood that is clean is chipped for use as a fuel in a bio-mass boiler. Wood that is dirty is chipped into bark mulch. Chipping for bark mulch involves a chipper with teeth instead of knives. This video shows chipping for bark mulch. Note how the top of the chipper unit rises and falls as it automatically adjusts the feed rate into the machine. The ability to access the chipper with a truck dictates whether or not chipped product is put onto the ground and then loaded or chipped directly into a truck. This photograph is No. 4 in Plate XIII of The South Worthington Parish Book by Reverend George Reed Moody. Notes on page 98 state that she was born in Walpole, NH on 1817-10-17 and died on 1904-05-06 (presumably in Peru or Worthington). She married her second husband, Deptford Billings, on 1869-11-16. They had 6 children. Their home was in Peru, near the Worthington line. Please see this book for further information. They were originally entered into the database with little identification. The photographs were taken between 1882 and 1907 by the Howes Brothers of Ashfield. The origin and purpose of the number often written on the binding tape of these dryplates are presently unknown. The slides were cleaned and catalogued by Marion Sweeney between 1982 and 1986.
