The Pierce (also Peerce) Tavern(also Lafayette Hotel) was on the site now occupied by the Worthington Library. Purportedly Lafayette stayed overnight at the inn during his 1826 tour of America. The tree was planted around 1830. Portions of the inn were later incorporated into the house next door (1 Huntington Road) by the Creelman family. This photo was used in the second edition of Papers on the History of Worthington. Frank Feakes makes note of the planting of the elm (post Lafayette's visit) and suggests that Lafayette may have stood outside the gabled section of the Pierce Tavern which fronts on Buffington Hill Road. The schoolhouse was used as a residence for a few years for drivers for Henry Snyder's Express. Tommy Stone's family of four occupied it at one time.
