The Lafayette House was also known as the Pierce (Pearce) Tavern. It subsequently fell into ruin and was demolished. In June 1825 General Lafayette spent the night here and greeted the townspeople under the Lafayette elm which is no longer standing. The picture also shows a tree called 'Lafayette Elm'. ]]>
