It is made of maple wood and is polished. It is on a stand with felt on the bottom. The stand holds a cup shaped object which is pierced in a star pattern with small holes. The bottom and top are of one piece. This could be due to the swelling of the wood. Possibly it separated and often there was a brush in the bottom half. This sander was in a glass case in the Rice Room at the library. this is according to Catherine Rude-Sena. Stamped on the metal spade-like head is the name of the manufacturer (Rodgers): The purpose of the fleam was to let blood from both humans and animals in order to test it for medicinal purposes. Rodgers was "Cutler to Her Majesty." It is made of rosewood and is polished. It is a pristine example of a tool of its type. Often there was a blood bowl or set of bowls associated with this object. This object was in a glass case in the Rice Room at the library. It was used to tool saddles, etc. with a name or a brand and could have been used by Rice in the Civil War. It is finely made, the wooden handle is polished and the metal tip is joined to the handle with a brass ring which is stamped with a design. This article reads: "Two show cases have been completed in the Rice Memorial Room of Frederick Sargent Huntington Library. One contains the christening dress and cloak of Susan Tracy Rice, who was born in 1863. These articles have only recently come to the library. The other case contains the dress uniform coat and sash of Brig. Gen. James Clay Rice, who died in 1865 of wounds received in the Civil War. There is also a gun of the War of 1812 which was converted for use in the Civil War. These show cases are the gift of Prof. and Mrs. William G. Rice Jr. of Madison Wis." The Civil War artifacts have been given to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. The christening dress and cloak are now in the Historical Society archives.
