An inscription on the front end paper reads: "Edward M. Bates. A present from one who hopes to merit the esteem due to a Mother." Topics include: "The importance of the Season of Youth," "The object of Life," "The influence of Associates and of Books in the ormaton of the character," "The choice of a Profession," "Temperance," "Courtesy," "The duty of Young Men in relation to the perpetuity of Religion and he support of Religious Institutions," "Amusements," "The importance of Personal Piety in the formation of the character."
