Chase's History of Haverhill published in 1861 concerning Israel Bartlett, (a soldier from Haverhilll), who marched in the year 1777 when the British Army surrendered to Gen. Gates. Traveling from Andover and Albany and back to Charlestown, Israel Bartlett 'dined at Chesterfield, stop'd and baited at Partridgefield (Chesterfield - Worthington townline on Old Post/Partridge Road possibly the well near intersection with Indian Oven Road was a watering tub, identify Jerrilee Cain) put up at Worthington'. On his return from Albany 'we marched to Worthington from Pittsfield 20 miles through exceedingly bad mountains and deep mud'.
